Detox Methods

Here, we have a number of detox methods that health care practitioners use on a regular basis for cleansing and detoxification purposes. Two such methods are described below.

Incorporate these sound practices into your lifestyle until they become second nature. If you do, you will have taken another step on the road to maintaining an ageless body.

Below, we discuss heat therapy for detoxification and fasting for cleansing.

Heat Therapy for Detoxification

You can induce an artificial fever by:

soaking in a tub of hot water,
wrapping yourself in blankets with a hot water bottle,
    sitting in a conventional sauna,
    using a far infrared sauna,
lying in a steam bath, or
in any number of other ways.

The idea is to get hot enough to raise your body temperature to about 101-104 degrees F for 15 to 30 minutes. The hotter you get and the longer you maintain the heat, the more relaxed you become. Heat may cause you to feel exhausted, just as if you had a vigorous workout, because the cells and tissues of the body have in effect been working at an accelerated rate.

Saunas are great detox method for detoxification of the body through the skin. They cause toxins to be released and sweated out. Saunas melt the fat layer in the skin, allowing the oil to ooze out of the oil glands along with its cargo of accumulated fat-soluble toxins. Over time, it is possible to reduce one's toxic load substantially, as well as keep it low. Also, water-soluble toxins are lost in the sweat, including heavy metals like mercury.

In addition, saunas are better than a steam bath or wet heat because body temperature can be kept lower, enabling you to remain in the sauna longer. Longer is necessary because oils take more time than sweat to ooze out onto the skin.

Another one of the popular detox methods to draw toxins through the skin is to have a hot water bath in which you have added one cup of sea salt and one cup of apple cider vinegar. Make the bath water as hot as you can stand and stay in it for as long as you can stand it.

Heat therapy, technically referred to as hyperthermia, is also known as sweat therapy, because it generates perspiration, or fever therapy because it induces an artificial fever. Heat therapy is one of the most powerful cleansing methods known. Hyperthermia is, is a sense, a natural all-purpose body cleanser.

Heat treatment as a detox method serves to:

    draws out toxins,
    helps clean out clogged pores,
    kills harmful microbes,
increases circulation and oxygenation of tissues,
    stimulates glands and organs,
    enhances the immune system,
gives a cardiovascular workout similar to aerobic exercise, and
    invigorates and refreshes the mind.

Modern living has created a problem the human body was never designed to handle, which his exposure to excessive amounts of environmental toxins, especially heavy metal and oil-soluble toxins. Toxicity is one of the leading causes of disease, and the overall chemical load to which we are now exposed is unprecedented in human history.

Toxic chemicals are bio-accumulating in our tissues faster than we can get rid of them, creating an unprecedented epidemic of chronic disease. Since our bodies were not designed to deal with the amount and variety of toxins we are accumulating, saunas to the rescue.

Heat causes toxins to be released by cells, and sweat treatments have been used by cultures around the world for millennia. Hyperthermic practices are known to reduce levels of organic toxins such as pesticides and PCBs, as well as heavy metals like lead and mercury.

Our bodies were designed 100,000 years before the dawn of the petroleum age a century ago. Since then, our environment has become a sea of oil-soluble toxins. Never before exposed to them, nature did not design a way for us to get rid of them.

As a result, the average person is bio-accumulating between 300 and 500 man-made chemicals, most of which have not existed that long. They are accumulating in our tissues and causing our cells to malfunction. The effects of these hundreds of chemicals, acting in combination is catastrophic to health.

In addition, the body stores many toxins in fatty tissues. Heat therapy is one way to pull these toxins out of the cells and eliminate them from the body. Toxins are removed through the organs of elimination, namely the kidneys, bowels, and skin, all of which are stimulated into feverish activity.

Sweat therapy cleans clogged pores, and removes uric acid, heavy metals, and metabolic waste. Heat causes pores in the skin to open up, allowing millions of tiny sweat glands to excrete sweat that consists primarily of water and uric acid, which is the major component of urine. Because sweat contains almost the same elements as urine, the skin is often referred to as the third kidney. It is estimated that as much as 30 percent of body wastes are eliminated through perspiration.

Fasting for Cleansing

The following are some of the many approaches to fasting and the corresponding fasting methods:

  • One-day per week pure water fast
  • One-day per week vegetable juice-pure water-herbal tea and tincture fast
  • Three-day vegetable juice-pure water-herbal tea and tincture fast once per season, so four times a year
  • Five-day vegetable juice-pure water-herbal tea and tincture fast in the spring and fall, so twice per year

While many people find it beneficial to carry out a three-day monthly fast, one-day per week fasts are probably less disruptive and have a gentler and more consistent effect.

One-Day per Week Pure Water Fast: Fruit and vegetable juices are not consumed on a water fast. Drink only distilled or reverse osmosis water that has been reconstituted with minerals and pH adjusted to the alkaline side. If the fast extends for more than two days, pure water is not usually consumed. As mentioned previously, the body needs water to carry on all the processes of metabolism, fluid circulation, and maintenance of chemical balance, as well as the process of cleansing.

Therefore, the faster should drink plenty of pure water, without going overboard. Approximately eight X 8 fluid ounce glasses a day for an average adult is adequate. If you are smaller in stature, less water is needed. If you are larger than average, you need to drink more water.

One-Day per Week Juice-Water-Herb Fast: The ideal technique for successful fasting is the use of fresh, raw fruit and vegetable juices. On such a diet the full spectrum of nutrients is supplied in an easy assimilated form, so the digestive tract is able to remain essentially at rest.

With the wide variety of juices that can be prepared, it is possible to select those that contain the right amount of carbohydrate and especially large quantities of certain nutrients that may be particularly needed.
